‘Key & Peele’ to Reboot the ‘Police Academy’ Franchise

Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele, known for their sketch show ‘Key & Peele,’ are two of the hottest comedic performers working today so it’s no surprise they’ve been offered a plum movie deal. In this case the duo have signed on to produce the ‘Police Academy’ reboot for New Line.

This news comes from The Hollywood Reporter, but had been rumored for a while as Peele recently was a guest on the podcast “The Movie Crypt” and mentioned that he and Key were in talks but that nothing was confirmed. Recently the two wrapped a role in the upcoming FX limited series ‘Fargo,’ and are currently working on their fourth season of ‘Key & Peele.’ Though the show hasn’t had the same cultural saturation as ‘The Chappelle Show,’ it’s the only thing in the intervening years that’s come close, while also having a very heavy nerd bent (to wit: “Liam Neesons”). It’s unknown if the two will write and star in the ‘Police Academy’ reboot, but both seem likely.

The good thing for the duo is that ‘Police Academy’ is a strangely forgettable franchise that followed the slobs vs. snobs blueprint of films like ‘National Lampoon’s Animal House’ and ‘Caddyshack’ and their escalating pranks. The franchise ran for seven movies and generated a television spin-off, though each successive entry essentially repeated the jokes from the first film. So that means with very little lip service, the boys can do whatever they want.
