For the first time since being rushed to a Mississippi hospital for the emergency surgery that resulted in the partial amputation of one of his legs, guitarist Leslie West has spoken publicly about his ordeal — and fittingly enough, he did it on Howard Stern’s show.

Stern has never been shy about proclaiming West his favorite rock guitarist, and their friendship has produced countless hours of entertaining radio banter over the years, but this week’s appearance was something different. Although Stern’s show is only available to SiriusXM subscribers, you can listen to a clip from his appearance below.

Complications from West’s diabetes caused the swelling in his leg that led to the surgery, and forced doctors to remove the limb up to the knee. He’s expected to make a full recovery, but faces months of rehabilitation.
