New ‘Matrix’ Trilogy Reportedly in the Works: How Far Does This Rabbit Hole Go?

New Matrix Trilogy
Warner Bros.

The Wachowski’s latest, ‘Jupiter Ascending,’ will hit theaters later this year and seems to herald back to the sibling pair’s mega sci-fi blockbuster that skyrocketed them to fame, ‘The Matrix.’ While ‘Jupiter’ may not have enough juice to become as big of a box office hit, Warner Bros. may have a backup plan — launching a new ‘Matrix’ trilogy.

Looks like it’s time to take the red pill again and find out just how far this rabbit hole really goes …

According to Latino Review, the Wachowskis have already begun drawing up outlines and story treatments for a new ‘Matrix’ trilogy that could potentially act as a prequel arc to the original films. One reported treatment, for example, is to see the origins of The Matrix, or rather, “the world that has been pulled over your eyes to blind you from the truth.” But the project is still too early in development.

The original ‘Matrix’ trilogy kickstarted in 1999 and starred Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne, Carrie-Anne Moss and Hugo Weaving. Reeves portrayed Neo, a seemingly normal computer hacker who discovers the truth about reality — the world as he knows it is actually a computer simulation projected into the minds of humans, who are held in a form of suspended stasis by robots. Once he’s freed from The Matrix by a small rebel group who’ve broken free, he must embrace his destiny as “The Chosen One” and save humanity from the machines. So far it’s unclear whether any original stars would return for the new trilogy or if the Wachowskis themselves would come back to direct.

The ‘Matrix’ saga is one of Warner Bros.’ highest grossing franchises and, as Latino Review points out, is the only project to come out of the studio’s relationship with the Wachowskis that yielded some serious dough. While some fans may be scratching their heads at the prospect of revisiting this world, it’s not all that surprising.
