Roddy Piper Will Celebrate The 25th Anniversary Of ‘They Live’ In Philly

Way back in 1988, pro wrestling legend Roddy Piper starred in John Carpenter’s sci-fi thriller ‘They Live,’ a cult classic film which partially inspired the famous Shepard Fairey ‘Obey’ posters. Yes, long before The Rock, Steve Austin or John Cena transitioned from the wrestling ring to the big screen, ‘Rowdy’ Roddy Piper was a mullet-wearing action hero who helped save the Los Angeles of the 1980s from aliens (even though some people living in Los Angeles at the time might have been high enough on coke to believe they were aliens).

Piper will celebrate the 25th anniversary of ‘They Live’ by attending a special screening of the film at Awesome Fest in Philadelphia on July 21. The screening is one of many events planned during the 10-week festival, which will have a decided ’80s theme. Movies from John Waters, John Hughes and filmmakers Stephen and Charles Chiodo will also be screened.

While it probably would have made more sense to have Piper mark the 25th anniversary of ‘They Live’ in Los Angeles, Philadelphia is probably much more sympathetic to the former wrestler, whose exploits as the host of ‘Piper’s Pit’ on old WWF broadcasts turned him into an anti-hero. Piper fared well in the Carpenter film, delivering the memorable line: “I have come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass, and I’m all out of bubblegum.” Watch the trailer for ‘They Live’ above.
