Nirvana’s 1993 episode of ‘MTV Unplugged’ was a critical and commercial success for the band, but Dave Grohl said that it almost didn’t turn out that way. In a new interview, he opened up about the difficulties the band had in putting that show together.

“That show was supposed to be a disaster,” he told American Way. “We hadn’t rehearsed. We weren’t used to playing acoustic. We did a few rehearsals and they were terrible. Everyone thought it was horrible. Even the people from MTV thought it was horrible. Then we sat down and the cameras started rolling and something clicked. It became one of the band’s most memorable performances.”

Five months after the November 1993 recording, lead singer Kurt Cobain killed himself. Grohl formed Foo Fighters later that year -- moving from drums to the front of the stage -- and they’ve become arguably the biggest rock band in the world, with a world tour coming later this year. While 20 years is a long time for a band to be together, Grohl and his bandmates found the formula to make it work.

“We cling to each other,” he continued. “We always have. It’s like I have four husbands…We don’t ever take it for granted. I honestly don’t know what life is like without the Foo Fighters. I can’t imagine. So when we get onstage, it’s a good thing. And while we’re onstage, we’re enjoying it. Always.”
