Bohemian Music in Billings Has Closed. Everything Left Inside is For Sale

Bohemian Music was one of the OG counter-culture shops in Billings. Decades before legal cannabis and smoke shops all over town, Bohemian was one of the rare spots in the Magic City where you could buy smoking paraphernalia "for tobacco use only," of course.

The eclectic shop at 2911 Montana Avenue was filled with all kinds of interesting things, from musical instruments and records to T-shirts and oddities.

Several years ago, I got to know Bohemian Music owner Francis Mignone a little bit. He would come into our radio station studios to record his commercials, and the task typically landed on me.

To say he was a character is probably a bit of an understatement.

Francis rarely had a prepared script, and we'd typically spend an hour or more creating a 30-second commercial. At first, this annoyed me. The entire process should take less than 10 minutes. But eventually I came to enjoy our time talking about music, life, and whatever else came to his mind in the studio.

Late last year, I heard the news that Francis had passed away (in 2024). Here's his obituary. The New Yorker who made his way to Montana was relatively well known in the local music scene. He is missed by many.

Time marches on, and everything left at Bohemian Music is for sale.

The Bohemian Music building is located in the heart of Billings' historic district, and I'll be curious to see what will become of the space. But before that... "everything must go," as they say. Per a Facebook post from the folks responsible for liquidating the space,

The sale is this Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday (Feb 12 - 15) from 10 AM to 7 PM at the shop at 2911 Montana Ave. I plan on stopping by to check it out.
