Montana has a reputation for friendly waves from passing trucks and communities that look out for each other. But if you’ve lived here long enough, you also know something else about the Treasure State.

People here can be fiercely protective of the place they call home.

That reality recently popped up in a story shared by actor Luke Grimes, who traded life in California for a quieter existence in Montana. While the move made sense for him and his family, he says not everyone in his new community has been thrilled about it.

When a Dusty Windshield Sends a Message

During a recent appearance on The Joe Rogan Experience, Grimes talked about an awkward moment that happened when friends came to visit. Those friends had driven in from California. Their vehicle had California plates.

After the group returned from a hike, they noticed someone had scrawled a not-so-subtle note across the dusty windshield of the car. The message basically told them to head back where they came from.

It’s the kind of thing that might sound surprising to outsiders, but for years, longtime residents have watched rapid growth, rising home prices, and increasing attention to the changes in communities that once felt small and quiet.

Why Some Locals Guard Their Towns

Grimes didn’t reveal exactly where he lives, and he says that’s intentional. According to him, publicly mentioning the location could upset people in that town. In smaller communities, word travels fast, and a sudden spotlight can bring a wave of attention that residents may not want.

Many Montanans appreciate the sense that not everything needs to be discovered by the rest of the country. When television shows or celebrities start drawing attention to certain areas, some locals worry about what comes next.

More traffic, more development, more outsiders trying to move in and change things.

Even Simple Nights Out Can Get Complicated

Grimes also joked that everyday activities have become a little tricky. He said going out to a local bar isn’t always worth the trouble because there’s often someone there looking to stir things up. From his perspective, it’s a no-win situation. If someone wants to provoke him, the attention alone can make things messy. Anyone who’s spent time in a small town knows how quickly a single moment can become the talk of the entire community.

Why Montana Felt Like Home to Grimes

Despite the occasional awkward encounter, Grimes says the move to Montana felt natural for him and his family.

While filming projects connected to Yellowstone and its expanding universe, he spent months at a time in the state. Eventually, he and his wife, Bianca Rodrigues Grimes, realized something. Heading back to Los Angeles started to feel less like going home and more like leaving it. So they decided to make Montana their permanent base and raise their young son here.

Back in the Saddle on Screen

Grimes is now starring in Marshals, a new series set in the same world created by Taylor Sheridan. In the show, his character Kayce Dutton joins a specialized unit of federal law enforcement officers working across Montana.

So while his television career continues to grow, his real life in Montana seems to come with the same mix of beauty, pride, and strong local opinions that many residents already know well.

'Marshals': Episode 2 Pictures Find Kayce at Peace, for Now

Episode 2 of the new CBS show Marshals promises to bring Kayce Dutton to a land with no laws. The Zone of Death was known as the "Train Station" in the Dutton household. That's where the family dumped their bodies and that's where Kayce will head as Episode 2 unfolds.
