Montana State University just landed a big national designation, and it could open the door to some major opportunities for local businesses and researchers. On Friday in Bozeman, MSU President Brock Tessman and Governor Greg Gianforte celebrated MSU's designation as a Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) OnRamp Hub.

Connecting Montana Innovators with the U.S. Military

In simple terms, the designation means MSU will help connect Montana companies and researchers with the U.S. military to develop and grow new technologies that could be used for national defense.

Making Defense Innovation Accessible Nationwide

The Defense Innovation Unit is setting up hubs around the country to make it easier for everyday companies and universities to work with the Department of Defense. These hubs act as a kind of front door, helping people move their ideas and products into real defense projects faster.

Guiding Local Technology Toward Federal Impact

If a Montana company or MSU researcher has technology that’s already working in the commercial world and could also be useful for defense, the OnRamp Hub helps guide them through the process of getting that tech in front of the right federal decision makers.

Montana’s Growing Role in National Innovation

Governor Gianforte says this puts Montana on the national map in a big way for innovation.

He pointed out that entrepreneurs here now have a much better shot at showing off their ideas on a national stage and turning them into projects that support national security, while also growing local businesses and jobs.

So instead of companies having to figure out complicated federal systems on their own, they now have help right here in Montana.

MSU’s Research Capabilities Aligned with Defense

President Brock Tessman says MSU already has secure research facilities and top-level faculty who work on advanced technology. Now, the OnRamp Hub connects all of that directly to defense opportunities.

That means students, professors, and private companies can collaborate to bring research out of the lab and into real-world use, boosting the state’s economy. It is another way MSU is using its research to support both Montana and the country as a whole.

A Bridge Between Private Tech and National Defense

Leif Ibsen, who will lead the MSU OnRamp Hub, says the goal is to bring together the university, private companies, and the Department of Defense to move faster and work smarter.

He describes the hub as an open front door, helping turn everyday commercial technology into tools that can also be used for defense and security. Basically, if you have a great idea or product, the hub helps get it to the people who can actually use it on a larger scale.

Montana Joins a Select Group of States

Montana is not alone, but this is still a pretty exclusive group. New hubs were also awarded to institutions in Kentucky and Minnesota.

Other states that already have DIU OnRamp Hubs include Arizona, Hawaii, Kansas, Ohio, and Washington. Now Montana is officially part of that national network, with MSU leading the charge in Bozeman.
