Being on the water is a big part of the Montana experience. Whether you plan on floating or fishing on a river or skiing on a lake, there are tons of options for those looking for fun and sun in Big Sky Country.
I'm a big fan of floating on the Madison River, but for those who are looking for something a little more challenging, Montana has several white water rafting options across the Treasure State. Plus, no matter your speed, there are opportunities to use a professional company, or you can go on your own.
Then there are the lakes.
Flathead Lake is the most popular recreational lake in the state, with hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. Not only is Flathead popular with tourists, but many Montanans make their way to the Northwestern part of the state each summer.
Flathead Lake is the largest freshwater lake west of the Mississippi River and certainly serves as a summer hub for Montanans. The lake is surrounded by all kinds of touristy shops that rely on tourism dollars to survive.

However, Flathead Lake isn't the only popular lake in Big Sky Country. Check out our list of The Most Popular Lakes in Montana below.
