Budding cattlelady Bayley Becker, a student with the Worden Riverdale 4H, raised a Black Angus steer named Lamar.  At the recent 4H Livestock Sale and Auction at MontanaFair, this Angus weighed a respectable 1,381 pounds.  Bayley should be delighted to know that her dedication and efforts to raise Lamar will help feed families in need in the Billings community and in Yellowstone County.

The winning bidder for this black steer is the Montana State Fund, who provides workers compensation insurance for employers and workers on the job in the event of onsite accidents or fatalities. Their purchase is part of the 4H Community Spotlight Program to educate and promote safety in the workplace to the younger generation in agriculture.

The farm and ranch industries are high-risk, and the ATV is a frequent common denominator in accidents.  Montana State Fund's work has resulted in a 13% drop in injuries over the past ten years.

So what will the MSF do with Lamar?  They could put on a whopping big barbeque, but instead the beef will be donated to Family Service and their food program.

For 118 years, Family Service has helped folks stay in their homes and out of dire poverty, through food boxes, rent and utility assistance, clothing, a back-to-school program and other services.  They network with other organizations in the immediate area and with the Montana Food Bank Network.  Family Service is located at 3927-3931 1st Avenue South in Billings.

For Miss Bayley, this is an experience in the free market and caring generosity.  I wish her every success in ag or whatever fields she enters, and I hope she manifests her care with action, not because she has to, but because she wants to.
