Coldest Montana Town on Tuesday? Looks Like Havre Has It
There's a reason they're the Havre Blue Ponies, I guess. It's cause they are ice cold. Much colder actually.
Who had the coldest wind chills in the state of Montana Tuesday morning? Looks like Havre has it at 60 below zero, according to a National Weather Service (NWS) listing around 8:48 a.m.
NWS Great Falls shared a list of wind chill observations of -40F or less. Full list is in the tweet below, here's a few that stood out.
Chinook -48 F 0815 AM 02/11 AWOS
Cut Bank Airport -49 F 0156 AM 02/11 ASOS
Havre -60 F 0630 AM 02/11 CWOP
Elk Park (MT DOT) -53 F 0615 AM 02/11 MESOWEST
Chester -52 F 0715 AM 02/11 CWOP
As a side note, why are they called the Havre Blue Ponies? Here's what Grok told me:
"The Blue Ponies mascot of Havre, Montana, traces back to the 1920s when Dave Morris, the basketball coach at Havre High School, described his team as resembling "blue ponies" due to their blue uniforms. This comparison stuck, and the school adopted the Blue Ponies nickname, which has been in use ever since. The name reflects a broader trend in Montana, where equine nicknames are common due to the region's deep ties to rodeos and ranching. Havre's choice, though, stands out for its specific origin in a coach's offhand remark about the team's appearance. This story, documented in a 1975 Havre Daily News article, has been consistently referenced in discussions of Montana's unique high school mascots."
