After I told her the good news that the procedure was complete, my mom told me that she was so glad I did it. Her dad, my grandpa, died from colon cancer in his early 50s.

Getting ready for a colonoscopy reminded me of jumping out of airplanes in the military. I wanted to jump out of airplanes, I needed to jump out of airplanes...but then you get to your first jump and you wonder what the heck you are doing.

Now that I am 45 years old, I knew I needed to get a colonoscopy. I wanted to get it done ASAP. But then when I showed up for my first ever colonoscopy, I wondered what the heck I was doing. Couldn't I just wait a few more years?

I already did the prep. The IV was in. No backing out now.

So how did my first colonoscopy go? Let's just say the anesthetist was my best friend. They wheeled me into the operating room, a nice smiley nurse starts talking to you, and before you know it- the IV sedation kicks in and you wake up not knowing a thing that just happened. It's almost like you just took a good nap. Luckily, I was all clear- no polyps.

How was the prep?

I'm experienced with fasting since I've taken part in dieting programs like the very successful Billings Last Diet, so cleaning out the system wasn't too bad. And at least you could have beef broth as a supplement the day prior to the colonoscopy.

Great job by the folks at the Montana VA clinic in Billings!

As an Iraq/Afghan veteran, I got my colonoscopy done through the VA. I chatted with the nurses and the doctor and the anesthetist prior to the colonoscopy. Let me just say- what a great crew it was with the Montana VA! The doctor told me how they are recommending younger people to get a colonoscopy. The nurse told me they are seeing younger people all the time with colon cancer. (Is diet driving the colon cancer risk?)

Why it matters

It's about being around for your kids and your grandkids. Have you guys heard of the comedian Nate Bargatze? He's hilarious. And clean. Last week, I played a clip (below) from one of his shows where he talks about people who lose weight before a 20 year reunion. Why not lose the weight for the people who love you, who've been with you in your life the last 20 years? "You made your wife stare at your moose body for 15 years." It's hilarious if you watch the clip below.

Get a colonoscopy (or other pertinent cancer screenings) if you're of age, or have family history. If you don't do it for yourself, do it for them.

By the way, we talked about the colonoscopy, the MAHA agenda, and more with Dr. Dale Williams and Dr. Jordan with Billings Last Diet. We then were joined by former New York Congresswoman and Dr. Nan Hayworth. Full audio in the podcast below.
