Lemmy Kilmister Roxy Mural Overlooks Lemmy’s Lounge at L.A’s Rainbow Bar & Grill
Lemmy Kilmister may not have been born in Los Angeles, but the Motorhead singer's impact on the Sunset Strip is undeniable. Just last year, the Rainbow Bar & Grill, Lemmy's favorite West Hollywood hang, dedicated their patio lounge area, re-naming it Lemmy's Lounge, while also having a Lemmy Kilmister bronze statue erected in the Lemmy's Lounge area. Now, there's another Lemmy Kilmister tribute that's popped up on the Sunset Strip, with a mural now gracing the side wall of the legendary Roxy Theatre where it overlooks Lemmy's Lounge at the Rainbow.
Roxy owner Nic Adler and Paul Tollett of Goldenvoice recently united to green light the painting of the celebratory mural commemorating the life of Lemmy and Motorhead. Motorhead's management ran a contest seeking a muralist painter to provide their services to paint this immortal artwork and the winner was Jules Muck (aka @Muckrock).
Although it was not known at the time she was chosen, there may have been a divine intervention in her selection, as it was later learned that she was born in the same U.K. town as Lemmy, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire. Like Lemmy, she’s now adopted Los Angeles as her home. You can watch a time-lapse 60-second video shot by Luciano Podcaminsky and edited by Robert Escamilla featuring the making of the mural. It's featured in the player above.
Motorhead manager Todd Singerman, said “This is for the fans. Lemmy would always say, at every show, ‘We are Motörhead, and we play rock ‘n’ roll. Don’t forget us.’ That’s my job now.” To that end, the statue and mural appear to be only the beginning of a series of plans to honor the band and its beloved frontman. Singerman’s current efforts include working on opening another Lemmy’s Lounge as well as a museum dedicated to the group.
The Lemmy statue was unveiled on Aug. 24 at the Rainbow in Los Angeles during a ceremony that included the Rainbow's Maglieri family, artist Travis Moore, Lemmy's longtime girlfriend Cheryl, Motorhead manager Todd Singerman and Wendy Dio, whose Stand Up & Shout Cancer Fund received some of the excess funds raised when fans sought to fund the creation of the statue.
