Could ‘Star Trek’ Return to TV With Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman?
Given the increasingly negative press trail that follows 'Star Trek Into Darkness' the farther along we go, and franchise director J.J. Abrams' eventual ship-jump to 'Star Wars,' countless fans have wondered if 'Star Trek' might end up back on the small screen before long. Abrams himself recently refuted the idea, but have franchise writers writers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman gotten the idea back on track?
According to Sky News, Orci reportedly claimed that he and another party (likely Kurtzman) had recently taken a meeting with CBS to discuss the possibility of reviving 'Star Trek' as a TV series. This would seem to contradict Abrams' words from a month prior, telling Crave that "“What I’ve been told from the powers that be [at CBS] is that they’re not interested."
Certainly CBS wouldn't want to abort potential plans for a third 'Star Trek' revival film altogether, likely positioning the film for 2016 to coincide with the franchise's 50th anniversary, though by this point it would seem that another TV iteration of 'Star Trek' could only help the franchise's standing. Whether we'd see the same rebooted canon as the films, or perhaps a smaller-scale glimpse into the universe a la Marvel's 'Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.' remains to be seen, though Orci's advisory to "watch this space" could suggest we hear news of 'Star Trek's TV future sooner rather than later.
What say you? Do you think CBS would be wise to plot a 'Star Trek' return to TV, or should the franchise wait until its next film to course-correct?
