Sure this weekend is Memorial Day. A three day weekend. For many it’s the unofficial start of summer, and it means BBQing becomes the norm.

On Monday it’s also time to take a moment and remember those that have passed. In particular those that have served our Country. Fighting for our freedom. We’ve put together a list of the several ceremonies and remembrances in the County that have been scheduled.

There is actually a pre-Memorial Day event set for this Thursday night at Yellowstone County Veterans Cemetery. Starting at 5 the public is invited to join in a clean up of the grounds and the placing of flags.

On Saturday at the Laurel City Cemetery volunteers can come out beginning at 9 and place flags on Veteran’s graves. On Sunday the flags will be placed at Mountain View starting at 8:30am.

A schedule of events for smaller services on Memorial Day include:

  • 8am Ceremony at Riverside Cemetery – Marine Corps League
  • 8am Veterans Park VFW
  • 9am Terrace Gardens (Smiths West) American Legion
  • 9am Sunset Memorial Gardens
  • 11:30am Yellowstone Valley Memorial Park – American Legion

There are two bigger services scheduled for Monday. Each is being presented by the United Veterans Council. The first begins at 9:45am at Mountain View Cemetery with a procession from the Caledonian Pipe and Drum Corp.

The second of the larger services on Monday takes place beginning at Noon at the Yellowstone County Veterans Cemetery. The ceremony will begin with the National Anthem sung by Kristie Ostlund.

However you choose to celebrate the three day weekend – take a moment at some time and remember those made it possible to fire up the grill!
