It may seem like they've been working on Main St in the Heights forever, but in reality, the project began just a year ago in the spring of 2021. The three-mile stretch of road from the south edge of the Metra to the intersection of Main with Bench/US89 has undergone extensive improvements. According to MDOT, here's what the construction project has entailed,

...a mill and overlay of the asphalt roadway, upgrading existing guardrail, replacement of signing and pavement markings, replacement of existing raised medians, upgrading of existing storm drain grates, construction of ADA compliant sidewalk corners, installation of accessible pedestrian signal push buttons, count down pedestrian signal heads, and reflective tape on traffic signal heads.

The City of Billings Public Works reminded residents on their Facebook page today (7/13), that final striping on Main has begun today and will wrap up on Friday evening (7/15). When I drove by shortly after lunchtime on Wednesday, multiple crews from Highmark were working on striping at various intersections.

Crews try to schedule work outside busy drive times.

According to the social media post, crews will be "working outside peak traffic hours to minimize impacts to the traveling public, resulting in work continuing into the evening hours up to 8 pm."

Remember to slow down in work zones.

Speeding through work zones is not only illegal, but it can also be quite dangerous. Fines are doubled when speeding in a construction zone and penalties can also result in jail time. By the way, the City of Billings Public Works Department is now hiring, with multiple positions available in the Maintenance/Equipment Operator division.
