‘Game of Thrones’ Creator George R.R. Martin Watches “Red Wedding” Fan Reactions
'Game of Thrones' creator George R.R. Martin's infamous "Red Wedding" chapter has been available to read in 'A Storm of Swords' for the better part of 13 years now, but only recently have more casual fans of the HBO series adaptation been aware of the bloody massacre from Sunday's "The Rains of Castamere." Filmed fan reactions to the event made the rounds this week, but what does Martin himself say when confronted with the reactions on 'Conan'?
Martin has often faced accusations of cruelty to his 'A Song of Ice and Fire' characters, but surely not the fans themselves, right? The 'Game of Thrones' creator remained in gleeful spirits amid the fan screams and revulsion when confronted with the popular "Red Wedding Reactions" video during an appearance on 'Conan' this week. "Now you know why your nerdy friends were really depressed 13 years ago," Martin joked, referencing a fan comment on the videos.
Earlier in the interview, Martin similarly laughed off accusations of cruelty to his characters, saying:
I suppose you write the sort of stuff you like to read. As a reader, or a viewer of television and film, I always like unexpected things; I always like the suspense to be real. We've all seen in the movies when the hero is in trouble, surrounded by twenty people, but you know he's going to get away because he's the hero, you don't really feel any fear for him.
I want my readers and I want my viewers to be afraid when my characters are in danger. I want them to be afraid to turn the next page, because the next character may not survive it.
If nothing else, the reactions to Sunday's 'Game of Thrones' season finale, "Mhysa," should prove a bit less visceral, however climactic the story turns. You can see the full interviews above and below, and give us your thoughts on 'Game of Thrones'' most recent shockers in the comments!
