A man has pleaded guilty to deliberate homicide for a deadly shooting in southern Montana.

Prosecutors and defense attorneys are expected to recommend life in prison for 33-year-old Thomas Joseph Schifferns at his sentencing scheduled for May 6.

Authorities say Schifferns killed 63-year-old James McGregor outside of Red Lodge in February 2018.

McGregor had been staying with Schifferns’ common-law spouse, who had reported that McGregor was missing and his cash had been taken from a safe.

According to court documents, Schifferns had admitted to the woman that he killed the man because he was “homeless and disrespectful.”

Carbon County prosecutors dropped charges of theft, robbery and evidence tampering in exchange for Schifferns’ guilty plea.
