The Mysterious Legend Of Montana’s Hitchhiker Of Black Horse Lake

We've all heard about different urban legends. Bigfoot, the Loch Ness Monster, the story about the serial killer in the house who calls the babysitter who is also in the house.

Of course, the majority of such stories are mostly fabricated, with maybe a little bit of a hint of truth. (I still have faith that Bigfoot is real)  However, that certainly doesn't stop us from sharing or passing them down from generation to generation. It seems as the years go by, the stories often become more elaborate and terrifying.

So what is the biggest urban legend in Montana? What is The Treasure State's claim to fame regarding creepy folklore?

The website World Traveling took a look at each state's biggest urban legend and when it comes to Montana's, it certainly makes the hair stand up on your arms.

According to the site, the biggest urban legend in Montana takes place on Highway 87, just outside of Great Falls known as The Hitchhiker of Black Horse Lake. The legend is that a Native American man dressed in denim is standing on the side of the road as you approach when you get close, the hitchhiker will then hit the front of your vehicle, which results in a smashed windshield, and the hitchhiker rolling over the hood.

When the driver stops to check on the hitchhiker, there is no actual body to be found and no damage to the vehicle.

While the story certainly seems far-fetched, it appears that there have been many reports over the years and the story seems to stay the same. Many believe the hitchhiker to be the spirit of a man who was actually hit on the highway and killed many years ago.
