If you were hoping to find information on when your kids' school is having their pick-up-your-stuff day, I'm sorry. I have no idea when each specific school in our area has scheduled their days. Public School Review says there are 62 public schools in Yellowstone County, serving over 23,000 students. I can barely keep track of my own kids' school schedules, let alone all the other schools.

Maybe your school has already had their pick-up day or maybe it's coming up in the next week or two. Hopefully, you have received the appropriate details via email, text or however your school communicates with parents.

My 2nd grader's pick-up day was yesterday (5/13) at West Elementary in Laurel from 3 to 5 pm and social distancing guidelines were in place. We were instructed to drive through the spot where we would normally drop her off for school every day and were told to not get out of the car or enter the building. Instead, we were supposed to hold up a sign with her teacher's name and school staff would bring her remaining school stuff out. And well, I wanted Mr. Grutsh to know how much he meant to my kid.

Dear Mr. Grutsh,

Oh, Mr. Grutsh. My student adored you and I could tell she was a little bummed that she didn't get to see you in person to wrap up her 2nd-grade year. I know how attached teachers and school staff can become with many of their students and I could clearly tell how much you missed them, through your notes, online learning video messages and ClassDojo updates. Thank you also for the nice little messages and surprises included in the bag of my kid's junk. She was thrilled.

I know a lot of children have really missed the routine of going to school, seeing their friends and teachers, and learning in the classroom. Here's hoping school returns to normal this fall. Whatever school looks in the future, the students will be lucky to have you.

-A Grateful Parent
