The Most Traumatic Food As A Montana Kid
Growing up in Montana has plenty of perks. From the beautiful views (in the summer), to the unique people you meet each and every day... to the odd and, frankly, gross food choices.
But... there is one Montana "delicacy" that I'm sure the majority of you HAVE eaten before... but if not, that one item is the one that messed with me the HARDEST as a kid.
Not So Gross... And Gross.
In reading the comments on Facebook today, some of the most traumatic foods people mentioned are... boring. For example...
- Meatloaf
- Tuna Fish Casserole
- Stuffed Shells
- Fried Eggs
- Green Bean Casserole
- Hamburger Helper
- And more
Some other ones that I fully agree with, however, would be...
- Liver and Onions
- Boiled Spinach in Vinegar (WHAT??? Nasty.)
- Microwave-steamed cauliflower with Cheese Whiz
- Boiled Brussel Sprouts
- Cow Tongue
- Porcupine Meatballs
All very much not on my "sounds good!" list... but, overall, the most hated and traumatic item of all in Montana, for me as a child... was Rocky Mountain Oysters.
Rocky Mountain Oysters. Cowboy Caviar. Montana Tendergroins!?! Dusted Nuts!!??!?!
Whatever you call them, no. I remember being at the "Nut Fry" in Miles City at the Bison Bar as a kid... and my dad tricked me into eating them. No thanks. Don't care if it "tastes like chicken!" because they do not.
To this day, I will joke with newcomers to Montana that they need to try them. Though, once they find out what they actually are... it doesn't happen.
Also, I've never heard of them being called "Montana Tendergroins" or "Dusted Nuts" until checking Wikipedia today... so, at least there's that. (Montana Tendergroins is a hilarious name)
